Course Description

This MODIFIED 40-hour Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) training is designed to meet the Wisconsin Department of Health Services EMR Scope of Practice while addressing the unique industrial hazards and emergency response needs of Domtar’s workplace. This training provides learners with the foundational knowledge, practical skills, and scenario-based practice to rapidly recognize, stabilize, and manage medical and traumatic emergencies until advanced EMS arrives. Training will be delivered via instructor-led classroom instruction, hands-on skills stations, realistic scenarios and simulation-based testing, and evaluations aligned with Wisconsin DHS EMR curriculum requirements. By the end of this course, participants will be able to: ● Demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure scene safety in an industrial setting. ● Perform high-quality CPR and AED use per AHA BLS standards to include AHA BLS Certification● Assess and record accurate vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and pulse oximetry. ● Recognize and manage respiratory and cardiac emergencies relevant to workplace exposures. ● Perform airway management techniques and safely administer oxygen using nasal cannulas, non-rebreathers, and bag-valve masks● Identify opioid overdose and correctly administer intranasal Narcan. ● Provide immediate care for traumatic injuries such as crush injuries, lacerations, impalements, head trauma, and burns (thermal or caustic). ● Apply bleeding control measures following “Stop the Bleed” best practices, including direct pressure, tourniquets, and wound packing. ● Perform safe spinal motion restriction techniques, including longboarding and confined space extrication considerations. ● Treat eye injuries and conduct eye irrigation for chemical exposures. ● Respond appropriately to inhalation hazards and work within Domtar’s Hazmat and decontamination protocols. ● Properly apply rigid splints and immobilize musculoskeletal injuries. ● Integrate patient assessment skills with clear, accurate documentation and effective communication with EMS responders. Key Course Content: ● Introduction & PPE: Hazard awareness, industrial safety practices, responder self-protection. ● Basic Anatomy & Physiology: Understanding major body systems relevant to EMR care. ● BLS & AED (4 hrs): Hands-on CPR/AED certification to AHA standards. ● Vital Signs: Practical assessment, interpretation, and documentation. ● Airway Management/Oxygen Administration: Airway adjuncts, suctioning, oxygen therapy. ● Narcan Administration: Intranasal opioid overdose recognition and reversal. ● Cardiac/Respiratory Emergencies: MI, cardiac arrest, asthma, chemical inhalation. ● Trauma Management: Crush injuries, impalements, lacerations, burns, head trauma. ● Stop the Bleed: Direct pressure, tourniquet, wound packing. ● Spinal Precautions & Longboarding: Safe patient handling in confined spaces. ● Eye Injuries/Irrigation: Chemical and foreign body management. ● Hazmat Awareness & Decontamination: Integration with on-site Hazmat team. ● Rigid Splinting & Immobilization: Upper and lower extremity stabilization. ● Scenario-Based Skills Practice: Realistic industrial scenarios, team response, documentation.
